Our class has been studying perspective and different point of views in stories. We have analyzed the various perspectives of the 3 Little Pigs with Fractured Fairytales and we've discussed how a change in perspective can alter how we feel about the story and certain characters. Our neighbor classroom, Ms. Staniszewski's homeroom, has also been studying point of view, so we decided to combine our classes to analyze the story of Cinderella. We've analyzed the original and the fractured story told from the Stepmother's perspective... oh, how these versions are different! The title of the fractured fairytale is Seriously, Cinderella is SO Annoying! It was a fun read aloud and now we are in the midst of doing station work as a group of ~50 kids. It's fun to see the kids interact with kids outside of our homeroom. I will let the Gallery of Pictures do the rest of the talking! Enjoy!

As a school, we are very lucky to have Technology Curriculum Specialist, Stephanie Garrett. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable about our school resources, but she seeks out new resources that she thinks our students will love and learn from (and she is always right on the money!)! So this past weekend, Mrs. Garrett signed up B025 for a new online literacy program to test out; it is called CSI Literacy. It is Crime Scene Investigations of historical events, where the kids have to read about the past and then answer questions! It is so much fun, I couldn't stop playing it myself after the first day! It's one of those activities where you're learning, but doesn't seem like it!
One of the benefits, is that this program can be accessed from school and from home as long as they have an internet connection - perfect timing for April break! The pictures below are from the first day we tried it out during Activity Period (they couldn't get enough)! Also, here is the link in case they want to give it a try at home (www.csi-literacy-cloud.com). Their username and password are the same -- first letter of first name and their full last name. For example, John Smith would be: username: jsmith password: jsmith. Happy Learning! As you know, the kids have been working tirelessly on their natural disasters projects. They have completed research, written a powerful paper, created a project that goes along with their paper, written black out poems, and now they get to show off all their hard work with the rest of the world and Mill Pond Community. With the help of our school's Technology Curriculum Specialist, Stephanie Garrett, we are creating a Google Classroom Website, where each student will be able to create a webpage to showcase all of their hard work. Not only are they so exciting about this, but they are taking it very seriously and are designing webpages that look like the real-deal. Here are some pictures taken throughout this whole Natural Disaster Unit -- from the research, to learning about each disaster, from writing, and to finally working on Google sites. You will notice that some kids even have 2 devices going at the same time (Chromebooks and their iPads - they are so skilled with the technology!!)
Enjoy! This past week, the kids finalized and created their final drafts of their Jot Thought Poems and Writing Prompts. We are starting a Narrative Writing Unit, and we discussed how we want to use all that we have learned about including the 5 senses to make our own writing stronger.
I will let the pictures speak for themselves: Over the past two weeks, we have been learning many different reading comprehension strategies. One of the strategies that we have really focused on is visualization. This strategy helps us practice incorporating the 5 senses into our writing. So we brainstormed some fun and descriptive fall-themed activities. Then we broke off into groups and selected an idea. We came up with: Dia de los Muertos, Trick-or-Treating, Fall Foliage, Pumpkin Carving, and Applie Picking. We then used sticky notes to come up with as many descriptors as we could for each idea. The pictures below show the kids organizing their stickies into a story or a poem that incorporates the 5 senses. Can't wait to post the final products!
